About For Student Power

For Student Power, established in January 2007, is a website and blog dedicated to the fight for student power on campus -- and in the rest of the world.

Students are the vast majority in all institutions of higher education -- and yet are treated as non-entities when decisions are made. Far from pining for a few token seats on academic and administrative committees, we work toward universities defined by participatory democracy: schools run from the bottom-up, not the top-down.

Student power, in this framework, is also a solution to the seemingly irretrievably fragmented activist left on campuses. A whole panoply of student activist campaigns, from socially responsible endowment investment, to equitable budget funding, to environmental policies, to affordable tuition, to diversity, to workers' rights (both on campus and off), are necessitated because students are powerless in the face of the modern university bureaucracy.

For Student Power seeks to chronicle, analyze, and support student struggles for power on their campuses and in their communities.
